MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 14, 2019 – Ford Motor Company Fund returned to Mexico to help fulfill educational dreams for students through its Ford Driving Dreams initiative. Ford Fund and the Ford Dealers Civic Committee, in collaboration with United Way Mexico, awarded scholarships to 100 students from Oaxaca and Chiapas to continue their education. Ford Fund is the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company.
“At Ford, education is one of the most important pillars in our strategy of supporting communities where we have a presence, and Mexico is no exception,” said Hector Perez, Ford Mexico’s president and CEO. “I encourage the winners’ parents to continue driving their children’s dreams and challenge them to achieve even greater goals."
Ford Fund announced the winners during a two-day educational celebration, where the participants were honored and congratulated by the automotive company, the Ford Dealers Civic Committee and Fondo Unido-United Way Mexico. The students also participated in activities to promote creativity, communication, autonomy, teamwork, trust, and empathy. The first event took place Tuesday, June 11, at Ford School # 202 Jose Maria Morelos in Santa Maria Atzompa, Oaxaca; and the second celebration was held on Thursday, June 13, at Ford School # 52 in Pijijiapan, Chiapas.
The students participated in the “What Drives Your Dreams?” essay contest to compete for scholarships and share their future goals. The three-year scholarships will help students and their families defray the costs of tuition in private high schools, supplies, transportation, and other basic needs that often keep students from finishing the school year. Scholarships are administered by United Way Mexico.
"Helping to improve people's lives depends greatly on providing students with the tools and resources they need to be successful. We are proud to bring Ford Driving Dreams to Mexico and inspire children to stay in school by giving them access to opportunities, scholarships, and resources," said Joe Ávila, manager, community development, U.S. & Latin America, Ford Motor Company Fund.
The Ford Dealers Civic Committee, founded more than 50 years ago, develops social responsibility strategies for Mexico’s most vulnerable communities. The committee has built 212 Ford schools to support elementary education, of which 193 have an enrollment of 80,000 students and have graduated 1.6 million students. They also offer parental engagement programs to 140,000 parents and training to more than 5,000 teachers, directors, and alumni.
Ford Driving Dreams was designed by Ford Motor Company Fund to help youth graduate on time and pursue higher education. The initiative has impacted more than 200,000 students across the United States, Puerto Rico, and Latin America since it was launched in 2012. It has delivered more than $10 million in educational resources. The scholarships are administered by the LULAC National Education Service Center, Inc. (LNESC). In addition to Ford Driving Dreams, Ford Fund educational programs in the United States include Ford Blue Oval Scholars, Ford Next Generation Learning, Ford College Community Challenge, and the Ford STEAM Lab.
